Giralte de Bruselas et al., The Main Retable at Oviedo Cathedral: Detail, Lazarus

1512-31
Cathedral of St. Savior, Oviedo, Spain

This is one of the Lazarus images in which the man rises from a horizontal sepulcher, in this case simply sitting up. The winding cloths mentioned in the scripture are absent: the man is naked. On Jesus' left are Martha and Mary; on his right, a man holding a cloth to his nose in anticipation of a smell from the body.
